All jib operators have strong opinions on the lenses that they love to use the most! There should be no surprise I hold them too. Two very common jib friendly lenses for digital cinema are the Canon 15-120 and Fujinon Duvo 14-120. They are both fantastic zoom lenses with pros and cons. The Canon 15-120 has a little extra reach which is nice to have as 120mm isn’t a ton of tele when it comes to live events. The Fuji Duo gets ever so slightly wider, always helpful! I personally find the full frame extender element on the Canon Cine lenses to be far sharper than the Fujinon Duvos. Both servo grips are very accurate, super smooth, and great to use. Factor in using cameras with different crop modes such as the Sony FX9, my preference actually lies with the Canon 17-120. The s35 image circle on the 17-120 actually covers the 5k crop mode on the FX9 offering an equivalent zoom range of about 20-144mm. That’s a very wide look for a lens that can punch in so far! The Canon 15-120 and Fuji 14-100 both do not cover the 5k crop mode of the FX9 and their equivalents run at about 22.5-180 and 21-150 in s335 or FF (with the extenders on). The extender isn’t that amazing on the Fuji Duvos and 22.5 on the Canon 15-120 is just slightly too punched in. Therefore, the Canon 17-120 is still a preferred lens for most live event work I do using cine zooms.
